JOIN

RIGHT ACTION STUDY GROUP

This group is open to all and devoted to supporting and enhancing participants' Buddhist practices on and off the cushion. It can seem difficult to practice right action nowadays, and our group seeks to encourage spiritual friendship --  kalyanamitta -- by gathering to read and discuss short written pieces that illuminate how we might relate to the eight-fold path, especially right action. How can we practice the precepts to avoid killing, theft, sexual misconduct, heedlessness, deception, and harsh speech? We will endeavor to support one another to act skillfully in the world.

Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 6:00 pm - 7:30- pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4190 Front Street, San Diego CA, in Room 323. Our first meeting is January 15. The church is across the street from the UCSD medical center. The entrance to church parking is on Arbor Drive.

ABout the Group

We'll open each meeting at 6:00 pm with a review of the reading, followed by a quick check in. Readings will be brief, 250-500 words. It will not be necessary to read them ahead of time. You will be sent the reading ahead of time though and are invited to read before you arrive.

If we have enough people, we'll break into small groups for discussion then spend the final thirty minutes as one group. If we have fewer than ten people, we will discuss the reading and our personal experiences of right action and the reading all together. All are welcome, newcomers, drop-ins, and experienced practitioners. The discussion portion of each meeting is guided by the group's mindful discussion gudelines.

To supplement our group's activities, listen to other talks available via our our self-study page.

Is There a cost to join this group?

Following a 2,500-year tradition in which the community financially supports the offerings provided, the teachings and meditation sessions in this group are offered on a generosity (Dāna) basis. No one is turned away because they cannot give. We are encouraging members to give what their budget and hearts of generosity allow, and/or to sign up for monthly giving on our donations page.
