Introduction to the Teachings of Sayadaw U Tejaniya
Saturday, may 30 from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Sayadaw U Tejaniya was born in Burma into a Buddhist family. He started meditating as a teenager, guided by the late Shwe Oo Min Sayadaw (1913-2002).
After getting married and taking over the family business, he struggled with depression and addiction. Due to family responsibilities, he couldn’t go on a long retreat as he wished. Instead, he practiced meditation at home while taking care of the business and his family. Through daily life practice at home and work, he learned to integrate meditation into his lay life and maintain it in any situation.
In 1996, he became a monk and now teaches meditation at the Shwe Oo Min Dhamma Sukha Forest Meditation Center in Yangon, Burma.
Sayadaw U Tejaniya’s approach is free from rigid styles or forms, influenced by his previous life as a layperson and his interest in adaptable practice. His teachings emphasize Right View, Awareness, and the continuous practice of maintaining these teachings throughout the day.
In this daylong, we will learn the keys to practice outside of retreat setting, using Sayadaw U Tejaniya’s style.
This daylong, led by Lienchi Tranfreely, is open to all.
Raised in a Mahayana Buddhist family in Vietnam, Lienchi Tran discovered meditation in 1984, inspired by the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. Her journey deepened in 1992 with Bhante Khippapanno, leading her to ordain and fully immerse herself in Theravada Buddhism. She trained under Sayadaw U Pandita and, since 2003, has been profoundly guided by her primary teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya, who encouraged mindfulness as a natural part of daily life.
After transitioning from monastic life, Lienchi returned to her career as an architect, weaving mindfulness into both work and everyday experience. She completed the Four-Year Teacher Training at IMC/IRC under Gil Fronsdal and Andrea Fella and now shares the Dharma with warmth and clarity, emphasizing awareness in daily living. This event is offered on a Dana basis. Dāna (pronounced "dah-na") is a Pali word meaning generosity. Dating back to the time of the Buddha, there has existed an interdependence between those who offer the teachings and those who receive them. The teachings are given freely, since they are considered priceless. It is the practice of dāna that has kept the Buddhist tradition alive for more than 2,600 years in Asia, where committed supporters have given generously to establish networks of monasteries and retreat centers providing for millions of teachers and practitioners. As these ancient teachings move to the West, we hope to keep alive this joyful tradition.
