dharma talk: When the Buddah Shook in Fear
Friday, Oct. 24, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Insight San Diego Welcomes
Gullu Singh
In-Person Dharma talk
when the buddah shook in fear
Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Join us for an evening of meditation and Dhamma reflection rooted in the Attadaṇḍa Sutta, as translated by Andrew Olendzki. This rare and intimate text offers a glimpse of the Buddha before awakening—not as a teacher, but as a man shaken to his core.
“Fear is born from arming oneself.
Just see how many people fight!
I’ll tell you about the dreadful fear
that caused me to shake all over…”
It wasn’t personal danger that unnerved him but rather the sheer weight of human conflict. He saw beings “flopping around like fish in water too shallow" lashing out in desperation. The world felt hostile, hollow, claustrophobic. He looked for a place to rest, but couldn’t find one.
Instead of collapsing into despair or retreat, he turned inward. He examined the roots of fear itself. Seeing it clearly, he knew what had to be done and the Buddha’s seminal teachings of the path to fearlessness was revealed.
All are welcome. Come sit with us.
As part of the Buddhist tradition of dāna—generosity—participants will have the opportunity to offer donations to support Gullu and the ongoing transmission of these teachings. All contributions are received with gratitude.
This offering is part of Insight San Diego’s week-long teacher in residence program with Gullu Singh.
