A Day of Self-Compassion:

Exploration of the Bright and Dark Places in the Heart

Saturday, January 6, 2024

Besides bringing immediate benefits to the individual, exploration of Self-Compassion is a unique entry into the core of Buddha-Dharma. To truly develop compassion we have to continuously examine our own experience of suffering, the dark places, as well as our noble qualities, our bright places, such as, generosity, loving-kindness and joy. These are, in a sense, our "tools" for the development and sustaining capacity of an open heart. The more we understand the ingredients of our heart, the more it will open. The approach will be a combination of meditation, experiential exercises and and small and large group interaction.

Richard (Rick) Avery, LCSW, started meditating about 35 years ago when he realized "the pursuit of happiness" as he understood it was only making him more unhappy. In his journey to understand his and others’ heart/minds, he has been fortunate enough to have been a psychotherapist, organizational consultant, and clinical instructor for the past 45 years. He is also a Certified Compassion Cultivation Trainer of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) program associated with Stanford University. In addition, he is an Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty, Department of Psychiatry at the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
