The Four Faces of Love
Wednesday evenings, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/11, 2/18, 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Life as a human being is not always easy. Sometimes we feel less than kind, or the pain – our own or that of others—seems too much to bear, and we look away. At other moments joy is nowhere to be found, and at times we feel as unsteady as an autumn leaf in the wind. How then can we meet our experience, and relate to it in ways that, rather than perpetuate suffering, serve our freedom?
In this 5-week class we will deepen our relationship to loving kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity, the four relational qualities known as the the Brahmaviharas, or Divine Abodes.
These are natural qualities of the unhindered heart, which do not need to be sought, but only revealed. When cultivated, they allow us to draw near to our experience, tenderizing the heart, making the mind more pliable and able to see things as they truly are, minus the fetters of our habitual reactivity.
Through talks, practices and exercises we will cultivate our understanding of these sublime qualities that support our freedom, or as we may also call them, the four faces of love.
